Lights and Lighting Matters

Lights and Lighting can make or break your elegantly decorated living room. In general, bright light is better for eyesights, and makes you more efficient, thus good for working. Dimmed light on the other hand, alows your eyes (and you) to relax more.

Lighting should be considered during the early stages of planning. When choosing lighting, you need to consider these:
1. Is it practical?
Start with your house electrical circuitry by consulting an electrician to ensure that the lighting circuit is capable of powering the number and type of lights you want. Track and downlight systems use low-voltage light and need a transformer and a separate circuit. Do not overload the circuit. Circuits are usually overheated when using a bulb with too high a wattage.

2. The activities in your living room
List down all of the activities that will take place in your living room. A flexible and imaginative approach to lighting will accomodate many different kind of activities.

Having done the above two, you can now start thinking about 'What Kind Of Lighting Should You Choose?'.

Here are the list of lighting types avilable in the market, and how it is usually used. There is of course no hard and fast rule on the usage.
1. Track or Downlight - for general illumination
2. Task Lighting - for desk
3. Underside of Shelves - for lighting in cupboards or display shelves
4. Spotlight - for ...

Go Pink This October!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A lot of websites turn pink (the color of hope) during this month and a lot them speak about this awareness. In the spirit of the effort and to show our solidarity with the fight against breast cancer, which is also being promoted by Pink for October, we're giving you some ideas and tips on how to include the color pink in your living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Enjoy!

For Living Room
Throw:
Include a comfy Cashmere Soft Throw in Hot Pink on your sofa. Put it against a sofa in contrasting color, like green, black, deep brown, or white. Try not to go the usual monochrome this October.

Sofa / Couch:
For the auto-fanatics who would bring their car in the house, try out the Pink Cadillac Sofa, which is fitted with overstuffed upholstery with great crafted back car shape. - If you can't get away from pastel, try out the StraightBack Microsuede Sofa Sleeper in soft pink, which is great for watching TV.

Beanbag:
Throw a Pink Beanbag on your living room floor. Get it in corduroy for a vintage look.

Curtains:
Let the windows in your living room sport Ruffled Country Curtains in pink. Use Semi-sheer fabric to allow a good amount of natural light in.

For Bedroom
Table Lamps:
Try out the handcrafted copper-foiled glass Tiffany-Style Pink Floral Table Lamps.
If you don't fancy Tiffanys or any lamp shades made of glass, try out the Heart-shaped Table Lamp in pink which is very suitable for a feminine bedroom.

For Bathroom
Bathrobe:
Indulge. Buy a Pink Terry Cloth Lined Kimono-style Bathrobe this October.

Towel:
Line your guest towels (or your own) with a wide pink ribbon at both ends of the shorter edges. If you're way too lazy, just buy them ready made like this Pink Floral Towel made of luxurious cotton.

Shower Curtains:
Ever thought of using a Pink Shower Curtain in your bathroom? Now it the perfect time to use it!

For Kitchen
Kettle:
Get a Shocking Pink Retro Kettle for you to boil water for your morning instant soups, oatmeal, hot tea and cocoa. Choose the one with a handle high enough for a comfortable grip.

Decorating Tips On Small Space - Living Rooms

So you have a small space for a living room? And you cringe everytime you look at it and wished you have a bigger space to accomodate your furnitures and fittings and other nostalgic items you've collected over the years.

Well, large or small doesn't really matter actually, as long as you apply the correct decorating techniques. For example, even a large living room would look messy and cluttered if you the arrangement of your furniture does not allow free moement and flow.

Now, let's get working!

Goal: To make a small living area look larger

Solution:

Clear The Path
Keep the furniture and furnishings knee-height, to eliminate obstructions. The farther you can see into, and through, a space, the larger and more open it will seem. Ottomans and low benches are one way to accomplish this.

Use Few Large Furniture
Also, reduce visual clutter by using fewer, larger pieces of furniture and accessories. Put one big armoire at a corner, a large chest as a table, a large sofa, and nothing else.

Go Neutral
Choose pale or neutral tones. Cool colors like blue and green will also help.

Use Small Prints or Go Mono
Limit yourself to small prints, and if you must use big prints, chose those which are within the similar color range. Go monochromatic.

Create A Focus
Place an armchair, a cupboard, a throw or any single piece of item in contrasting color than the rest of the colors in the room. This would create focus, and immediately boost the mood of a small room. To make a small space look larger does not mean making it look flat and dull.

Work Around A Great Piece
Work around an already-there item. If you have a fireplace, for example, work around it. This fireplace could also be your focal point.

Bare The Windows And Floor
Use bare windows and floors, and unbleached cottons and linens. Keep the wall clear.

Bring The Flower In
Bring the nature in, place a single flower in a clear vase in the room

Storage, Storage, Storage
Keep the place tidy and uncluttered. Use wall shelves to store small items, such as magazines, newspaper, CDs, DVDs and so on. For blankets, consider multi-function chests and ottomans that can also be used as tables or seats.

Get Creative
If storage is a problem (due to small space), get creative - hang that television on the wall, use a folding tables and chairs, paint closet doors the same color as your wall.

Use Mirror
Use mirrors for space and depth. To avoid bumping into 'yourself' everytime you enter a room, place the mirror 'behind' you, and high enough to avoid too much eye contact.

Get The Natural Light In
Open the windows - get the natural light in as much as possible

Indulge In A Little Luxury
Indulge - small space equals to 'less costly to furnish'. Buy an expensive modern arm chair to indulge yourself in a little luxury. Or place and ankle-deep wool rug at the center of your living room. You get the idea.

Happy re-decorating!
